Boredom is not a lack of activities, it is a lack of stimulation in the mind. This is why doing just anything doesn’t alleviate the state of boredom, it just distracts us from it. If we want to get rid of chronic boredom, we must do things that provoke different emotions in us or give us self awareness.
1. Goal Setting! They don’t have to be extravagant goals. They can be small, but they must exist for us to gain traction in our lives. If you have targets, your mind will naturally fill your brain with activities to do that will release endorphins, leaving you feeling great.
2. Consume art. I’m not talking about putting on that Spotify playlist that you have in the background every day, consume something new that makes you think outside the box. You could read a novel, short story or poem. Check out a local tattoo artists portfolio. Familiarise yourself with famous paintings, learn graffiti style art. Colour in, practice calligraphy, make graphics or edit photos on a free platform. Art is important for the human brain because it shifts us into a state of conclusion to a state of question, and you are never bored and curious at the same time.
3. Sort through all those files. This is one I’m guilty for putting off but I promise you it will make you feel much better, make your device run faster and potentially even busy you for days. Perhaps you have to sort through your finances (it is tax time), clean old photos and videos or even archive old posts off your instagram. Let’s do this one together.
